Use-cases are limited; as soon as developers introduce Shadow DOM, they lose all built-in accessibility features. Most of the preloader solutions I've found on the web display the loading progress by drawing a line, sizing a block or updating a text field, based upon a percent loaded calculation. This tutorial will show you how to create on a very simple and effective way, advanced preloader using the Action Script. This article provides an introduction to writing classes and walk you through some of the nuances of the new language by building a modular preloader. Along the way, I’ll identify best practices to optimize performance and suggest strategies for reskinning artwork to achieve a desired look and feel. This article covers the fundamentals of ActionScript 3. Some knowledge of ActionScript 2 is recommended but not necessary. Preloaders are a must have in your Flash applications. They tell the user that the program is running but can’t show any contents until they’re sufficiently loaded. In this tutorial I’ll help you create an Apple inspired preloader MovieClip and teach you how to display some loading information. All this using Flash and ActionScript 3.0. A Flash preloader is useful in preventing partial loading of a movie while it plays. The preloader is usually made attractive to the viewer to keep him/her occupied while the full flash movie or some external data is loaded in the background. We are going to learn how to create a very simple preloader while concentrating on the actionscript that makes it work. Most of the preloader solutions I’ve found on the web display the loading progress by drawing a line, sizing a block or updating a text field, based upon a percent loaded calculation. Now these solutions work just fine but I think they miss a trick. Flash has it’s roots in animation so why not add some visual flair by letting Flash do what it does best. I wanted to make a MovieClip follow a circular path for a preloader I created. Making the needle revolve around was childs play but getting a MovieClip to track its outermost path was a little trickier. Using sine and cosine I created this but had a few problems along the way which I solved and decided to put into a tutorial in the hope of helping others. One simple change will give you complete freedom over the look of your preloader. Create 100 frames inside your preloader graphic and draw anything you like in those frames. If we take that same percent loaded value we can now use it to jump to any of our frames within the preloader. The example above uses MainPreloaderCentred.as, a customised version of the MainPreloader.as class I posted yesterday. This one keeps the preloader graphic centred on the screen at all times, adds some textual output and most importantly uses the animation method outlined above. As everybody well knows, a very important thing is to let the user know that our application’s SWF is loading. More so if the SWF is big and heavy, perhaps adding percentages and timescales of the loading phase. With this tutorial I’d like to explain, as best as I can ( especially to those who find Actionscript difficult to digest ) how to create a good preloader. In this detailed tutorial you will see how easy it is to create a preloading system that is gradually displaying an image as your site loads. I will show you the following: • How to import an image into Flash, • How to create a rectangular movie clip and turn it into a mask, • How to write ActionScript that will power the preloader and more.
